Heart Yin Deficiency is likely to lead to Empty Heat in the Heart; on the other hand, febrile disease at the Nutritive(Ying) Level may damage Heart Yin. Herbs that nourish Heart Yin are thus often combined with herbs that clear Heart Fire. For example, A Jiao and Mai Dong are combined with Huang Lian and Lian Qiao.
Herbs that tonify Heart Blood and Yin and Herbs that calm the Mind
When Heart Blood and Yin are deficient, the Heart is not nourished; this leads to restlessness from Deficiency. In this case, herbs that calm the Mind are combined with herbs that tonify Heart Blood and Yin. For example, Bai Zi Ren, Suan Zao Ren, Long Gu and Fu Shen are combined with Dang Gui, Mai Dong, A Jiao.
Herbs that clear Heart Fire, resolve Phlegm and open the orifices
Mental disturbance due to obstruction of the Heart orifices can rise either from Turbid Phlegm or from exterior Heat invading the Pericardium. Since these two conditions may coexist, herbs that clear Heart Heat are ofen combined with herbs that open the orifices. For example, Huang Lian, Lian Qiao and Niu Huang are combined with She Xiang, Bing Pian, Shi Chang Pu and Yu Jin. Similarly, herbs that resolve Phlegm are combined with herbs that open orifices. For example, Yuan Zhi, Zhu Li and Bei Mu, are combined with Shi Chang Fu, Yu Jin and Bing Pian. For restlessness with insomnia due to Heart Fire Blazing with Phlegm-Fire harassing the Heart, herbs that clear Heart Fire are used in combination with herbs that clear Phlegm and herbs that calm the Mind. For example Huang Lian and Zhu Ru are combined with Fu Shen, Bai Zi Ren and Long Gu.

These herbs are usually bitter and cold in nature and have a strong therapeutic action. They are indicated for Lung Fire and retention of Water in the Lungs. Representative herbs include : Huang Qin, Ting Li Zi, Sang Bai Pi, Di Gu Pi. Huang Qin is more effective in purging Lung Fire while Ting Li Zi is more effective in purging Water from the Lungs. Sang Bai Pi and Di Gu Pi are applicable in both condition but have a milder action.
